Over the midterm break, the Morogoro International School (MIS) Piranhas proudly represented the school at the TALISS Invitational Gala, competing in a highly competitive event featuring 16 teams from across the region. Despite having one of the smallest teams, MIS was represented by nine determined swimmers ranging in age from 8 to 18 years old, and the team delivered exceptional performances.

A highlight of the event was that every swimmer achieved a personal best in at least one event, with Samwell Devangwa, Reuben Shallom, William (Liam) Hamisi and Reuben Moore also earning medals for their outstanding performances. The determination, focus, and team spirit were evident throughout the competition, earning MIS 230.5 points and finishing ahead of 10 other schools and clubs — a remarkable accomplishment for a small but dedicated team.

A Unique School-Based Club

The MIS Piranhas have a long-standing tradition of excellence and development. Established as one of the few school-based swimming clubs in Tanzania, the Piranhas stand out in a landscape dominated by private and community-based clubs. The club emphasizes not only competitive success but also the growth of each swimmer’s confidence, teamwork, and discipline. Many alumni have gone on to achieve national-level success, reflecting the strong foundation built at MIS.

Every Student Swims

Aligned with the holistic approach encouraged by the Cambridge International curriculum — which prepares students with skills for life, not just academics — MIS strives to ensure that every student learns to swim and develops essential water safety and lifesaving skills, empowering them with confidence, resilience and lifelong physical wellbeing.

This year, the MIS Piranhas proudly celebrate 13 years of swimming excellence, nurturing young swimmers and a love for the sport while building a legacy of dedication, teamwork, and achievement.

This unique school-based club continues to provide students with the opportunity to pursue swimming seriously while maintaining a strong connection to their academic and school life. The supportive coaching staff and dedicated swimmers embody the core values ofrespect, integrity, and responsibility in and out of the pool.
