Foundation stage

Early Years

In Early Years, which includes Nursery and Reception, children develop a passion for learning and discovery and their natural curiosity to learn new things is encouraged as they learn through play.

Cambridge

Early Years

At MIS we follow the Cambridge Early Years curriculum for our youngest children. This curriculum ensures that children learn through play, teachers work closely with parents and the welfare, learning and all-around development of children are fulfilled. It supports children whatever their level of English when they begin at MIS.

Early Years at MIS is a three-year programme for 2-5 year olds and is built around four key areas of early childhood development: Physical development, Cognitive development, Language and Communication development and Social and Emotional development.

    Curriculum Areas

The Cambridge Early Years curriculum takes a holistic approach, focusing on the overall development of the child and their connection with the world and people around them. Our six curriculum areas provide guidance and support for progress in all aspects of early childhood development.

It equips children with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need for the next stage of their education, Cambridge Primary.

    Communication and Literacy

Speaking, listening, reading, and writing are essential to a child’s early development. By introducing language through enjoyable activities and exposing them to a variety of texts, we inspire a lifelong curiosity for learning.

    Creative Expression

Creative expression enables children to share their ideas and nurture their imagination through art, design, music, dance, and drama. This vital area integrates skills and cognitive processes from across the entire curriculum.

    Maths

It’s important to help young children understand how mathematics influences everyday life. Through games and activities, we introduce them to the mathematical language, thinking, and concepts they’ll need as they begin their primary education.

    Physical Development
Our curriculum promotes the development of movement skills through play, fostering positive attitudes towards exercise and building a foundation for healthy, active lives.
    Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
This area is fundamental to children’s lives, supporting their well-being and success in all other areas of learning. It helps them build social skills and friendships, manage their emotions, respond to others’ needs, and develop self-esteem and confidence.
    Understanding the World

This curriculum area nurtures children’s natural curiosity as they explore their surroundings. It lays the groundwork for various subjects in primary education and beyond.

    After-School Enrichment

Students in Early Years who wish to stay past noon are welcome to join the After-School Enrichment Programme (if space allows). The programme will further their social, personal, creative, and educational development outside of regular classroom activities. The thematic units are cross-curricular and use art, drama, and critical thinking to engage students.
