From January 30th to February 1st, the MIS Cross Country Running Team embarked on an exciting journey to the Kilimanjaro Trails Festival (Kili Trails) at Simba Farm, in West Kili. This annual event, described as “a weekend-long celebration of the outdoors on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro,” provided our students with the perfect opportunity to challenge themselves, connect with fellow runners, and embrace the spirit of adventure.

Joining forces with 40 runners from Mavuno Village in Mwanza and former MIS students, the MIS team participated in support of Untamed Foundation, which amongst other things raises funds to help children in the rural south access education. This shared goal reinforced our school values of community and responsibility, as our students contributed to a cause larger than themselves while getting to know students from other parts of Tanzania.

A Weekend of Running and Teamwork at Kili Trails

Twelve MIS students, ranging from Year 3 to Year 13, took part in various races that tested their endurance, fitness, and sportsmanship—qualities we value deeply at MIS. The weekend’s races included:

  • 1.5 km Rafiki Run: A fun and fast-paced dash around the campsite, perfect for both serious competitors and those simply looking to enjoy the experience.
  • 10 km Forest Trail Run: A stunning yet challenging course through winding forest paths, providing breathtaking scenery along the way.
  • 5 km Swala Sprint: A mix of competition and leisure as runners either pushed their limits or took a more relaxed approach to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Despite the physical demands of the event, our students embodied the value of resilience, tackling each race with determination. The team was fortunate with the weather—rain only arrived on the final night, ensuring generally good conditions for all the races. Running the 5K in early morning fog added to the adventure, making for a truly memorable experience.

Strong Performances and Achievements

Our runners displayed excellence in their performances, with many achieving personal bests and securing top positions in their respective age categories. Every MIS runner who completed their race, received a medal, a testament to their dedication and training under Coach Mbaraka since August. Some students even earned special awards for placing in their age groups:

  • 1.5km Rafiki Run:
    • Zane – 1st place (boys 9-11 age group)
    • William – 3rd place (boys 9-11 age group)
  • 5km Swala Sprint:
    • William – 2nd place (boys 9-11 age group)
    • Zane – 3rd place (boys 9-11 age group)

  • 10km Forest Trail Run:

    • Jolene – 3rd place (girls 13 & under age group)

More Than Just a Race

Beyond the competition, the festival was an opportunity for our students to embody collaboration and responsibility. Supporting each other throughout the races, celebrating victories, and learning from challenges, they demonstrated the true spirit of sportsmanship.

MIS is incredibly proud of our runners and their achievements. Their dedication, courage, and enthusiasm reflect the core values of our school, making this experience not just about winning medals but about growing as individuals and as a team.

Thanks to all involved for a fantastic weekend of sportsmanship, camping and fun! We look forward to next year’s event and another chance to push boundaries, build friendships, and represent MIS with pride!
