Morogoro International School (MIS) is always looking for ways to expand the sports programme to make sure that it is varied and offering something that might pique each child’s interest. All students are encouraged to join in with emphasis on personal improvement and enjoyment. With the involvement of numerous members of staff, we are able to offer a wide-ranging and rewarding sporting experience for the students at the school. In recent years we have seen the emergence of inter-school and national-level competitions within Tanzania. Our teams have travelled to Moshi and Dar es Salaam to compete in such diverse activities as swimming, basketball, football, netball and volleyball.
One of our new specialists is Coach John Massey, who brings decades of football experience to the table having previously played professionally himself. This year MIS has embarked on establishing a Football Academy alongside Football club. This will offer a selective football programme for our young and more talented players. Football Academy hopes to create a competitive environment for students which allows them to focus on the game, progress through continuous athletic performance, and team build with other athletes of a similar skillset and potential. Regular scheduled Friday matches with teams around Morogoro are a great way to test their progress.
“It’s been such a long time since an MIS football team has achieved success on the football field. But on Friday 19th November, the team won their first game 3:2 in a closely, at times physical, game. Ronald scored 1 goal; Andrew K scored 2.”
It has been a tough start to the season and arranging the fixtures did not prove as easy as first anticipated. Yet there is amazing team spirit and Coach John Massey is sure the Football Academy will continue to grow as a team and bring future successes to the school.
A special thanks must go to Mehdi, Year 12, for his efforts behind the scenes to secure sponsors for 2 kits, balls, cones; additional sponsor money has come in from the UK too – for our new training bibs. The team would also like to recognise Moshafiq, whose name is proudly displayed on our kits and Hatim Enterprises for leading the way with local sponsorship.
Thank you to all the MIS students for their support and enthusiasm and the inspiring motivational quotes, from Anita and Karisah, that kept the team’s spirits up this week and to the teachers who turned up to support the boys and share in their first victory.
“I’m sure the MIS name, through the Football Academy, will continue to be put forward in a positive light in the local community” said Coach Massey.
